The Galaxy Driftwood Catfish (Tatia galaxias) is a rare and stunning species of wood catfish, named for its starry, galaxy-like speckled pattern across its sleek, dark body. Native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly in the Amazon basin, this nocturnal species thrives in well-structured environments with plenty of driftwood, caves, and shaded areas.
This catfish reaches an average size of about 3-4 inches, with a maximum size of around 4.5 inches. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended, providing ample hiding spaces and a soft substrate. Despite its secretive nature, the Galaxy Driftwood Catfish has a peaceful temperament and does well in a community setting with other non-aggressive tankmates.
Caring for this species is considered moderate, as it requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained tank with good filtration. Being a nocturnal feeder, it prefers a diet of meaty foods such as sinking pellets, bloodworms, and small live or frozen invertebrates. Once acclimated, it may occasionally venture out during dim lighting or feeding times.
