The Pencil Fish, or Nannostomus beckfordi, is a peaceful and beautiful species of freshwater fish that originates from South America. These slender fish are known for their elongated bodies, which resemble a pencil, and their shimmering silver and green coloration.
Pencil Fish are best kept in groups of 6 or more in a well-planted tank that is at least 20 gallons in size. They prefer soft and slightly acidic water, and appreciate the presence of driftwood, rocks, and plants to mimic their natural habitat.
These fish are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them ideal tankmates for other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, and small catfish. However, they may become timid and hide if kept with more aggressive or boisterous fish.
In terms of diet, Pencil Fish are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods including high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms. They should be fed small amounts multiple times a day to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition.
When it comes to care difficulty, Pencil Fish are considered to be a moderate species to care for. They require a stable and well-maintained environment, proper filtration, and regular water changes to keep them healthy and happy.
