The Hector Goby, also known as the Yellow Prawn Goby or Yellow Watchman Goby, is a small, peaceful saltwater fish species that originates from the Indo-Pacific region. They are named after the Greek hero Hector due to their courageous nature in defending their burrow homes.
Hector Gobies are relatively small, with a maximum size of 3 inches, and require a minimum tank size of 20 gallons. They are active burrowers and appreciate plenty of live rock, sand, and hiding places in their aquariums. They are also peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful species.
These carnivores will eat a variety of foods, including frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and small pieces of fish or shrimp. It's important to provide a varied diet to ensure they receive all the necessary nutrients for optimal health.
The Hector Goby's unique characteristic is their bright yellow coloration, which is contrasted by their black and white markings. They also have a unique symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, where the shrimp create burrows that the goby then shares and defends.
