The Peacock Lionfish, also known as the Dendrochirus biocellatus or Twinspot Lionfish, is a fascinating and visually striking marine fish recognized by its ornate, fan-like pectoral fins and unique body patterns. With bold red, orange, and brown stripes and prominent “eye” spots on its dorsal fins, the Peacock Lionfish is both beautiful and intimidating. This species grows to an average size of 6 inches, with a maximum size of around 7 inches. A tank size of at least 55 gallons is recommended to allow sufficient space for exploration and movement.
Peacock Lionfish are relatively peaceful and solitary fish, though they can be semi-aggressive towards smaller tank mates that may appear as prey. They are moderately challenging to care for, requiring stable water conditions and careful handling due to their venomous spines, which can deliver a painful sting. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species primarily inhabits coral reefs and rocky crevices.
The Peacock Lionfish is a carnivore and thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as small fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans. It may take some time to adjust to captive foods, so it’s often best to start with live foods before transitioning to frozen or prepared options.
