The Silver Hujeta Gara (Parapsilorhynchus sp.) is a rare and fascinating freshwater fish known for its slender, silver body, streamlined shape, and excellent algae-grazing abilities. Originating from fast-moving rivers and streams in South and Southeast Asia, this fish is an active, peaceful species that thrives in well-oxygenated aquariums with strong currents.

A Name That Reflects Its Sleek Appearance

The "Hujeta" reference in its name is due to its elongated, torpedo-like body, resembling the predatory Hujeta Gar (Ctenolucius hujeta), despite being a completely different species. However, unlike its namesake, the Silver Hujeta Gara is an herbivorous algae-eater, making it a beneficial addition to planted and river-style aquariums.

Growth and Tank Requirements

This species reaches approximately 4-6 inches in length, requiring a minimum tank size of 40 gallons. Due to its preference for fast-flowing waters, an ideal setup includes smooth river stones, driftwood, and live plants that can withstand moderate to strong currents. A powerhead or canister filter helps replicate its natural environment.

Care and Water Parameters

Silver Hujeta Garas thrive in temperatures between 72-80°F, with a pH range of 6.5-7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Since they originate from oxygen-rich environments, they require strong filtration, regular water changes, and high dissolved oxygen levels for optimal health.

Diet and Feeding

Unlike predatory species with similar body shapes, the Silver Hujeta Gara is a herbivore, feeding primarily on algae and biofilm in the wild. In captivity, they should be given a diet rich in algae wafers, spirulina flakes, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini and spinach), and high-quality sinking pellets. Occasional protein sources, such as insect larvae or bloodworms, can be offered in moderation.

Unique Behaviors

This species is peaceful but highly active, often seen darting around the tank, grazing on algae-covered surfaces, and interacting with other fish. They do best in small groups of 3 or more, as this reduces stress and encourages natural behaviors. Their sleek body and constant movement make them a great addition to high-flow community aquariums with similarly active, peaceful tank mates.
